A CURVA DO RIO, V.S. Naipaul

Salim é um muçulmano de origem indiana destinado a continuar a tradição da família, que vive na costa africana. Mas deseja mais e parte à aventura, comprando uma pequena mercearia no interior do continente. Numa localidade onde ainda estão presentes as ruínas do domínio europeu, mas que parece ter ultrapassado  os dias da guerra civil e começa a prosperar. Contudo, aos poucos, os fantasmas do passado regressam, com a chegada ao poder do novo presidente e a sua visão para uma nova África. Uma altura em que os negros começam a contar as mesmas mentiras que os brancos, como escreve Naipaul. O resultado não é positivo. 

Este livro foi publicado em 1979 e aborda a história da África de então. Eu nasci depois e tenho dificuldade em me identificar com este tipo de história. Não consigo identificar o Zaire (actual República Democrática do Congo) como o país não identificado pelo autor, nem Mobutu no presidente que fala (segundo algumas críticas que li, é de ambos que se trata). A escrita de V.S. Naipaul, que venceu o Nobel da Literatura em 2001, é irrepreensível e mantém-nos agarrados do início ao fim. Contudo, para mim é muito importante conseguir imaginar o ambiente do que estou a ler e confesso ter dificuldade em fazê-lo se não me conseguir identificar com os personagens.
